Lesley
Martin is a Fine Art graduate of Brighton College of Art.
During her studies there she became aware of the exciting
and accomplished decoration adorning the visiting fairs. Her
degree show took on a fairground atmosphere, and after graduating
she apprenticed herself to the Master Showman's Decorator
Fred Fowle in Balham London.
The rich references found in fairground painting and a
subsequent Interior Decorating business, using special decorative
effects, have informed her ceramic work, which she began
in 1996.
The theme of animals (often those found on a fairground
carousel) has been a constant one in her work, and she has
been exploring the sculptural and fantasy qualities of shoes
for the last couple of years.
Lesley works with White St. Thomas and White Earthenware
Paperclay, matt glazes, oxides and underglazes. Sometimes
introducing "found" ironmongery, high temperature
firing wire and ceramic transfers.
Lesley Martin has a studio/showroom in South West London,
and has been a member of The London Potters Association
since 1997. She studies ceramics with Jill Crowley at Morley
College, London.
